We zien een donkergeel bier met een mooie reep schuim. Vooral de limoen grijpt je bij de neus als je ruikt aan het bier, met daarachter heel subtiel wat kruidigheid.Het licht ziltige, natuurlijk te verwachten in deze gose van 7,5%, is best uitgesproken. Het zeezout biedt, in combinatie met koriander, wat granigheid. De zoete citrustonen van sinaasappel, kaffir lime en limoen alles voor een tropische traktatie waarbij de veelvoud aan smaken met iedere slok dichter bij elkaar komen.

Ooh, how 2025 got off to a good start. Waking up rejuvenated and with a hike through the wintery suns of Spain. Oh, yours didn’t start off so clear-headedly? In fact, it’s thumping just a little bit amid foggy memories and weather? I’m so sorry to hear- but I’d love to have a debrief of your partying into the new year over brunch, accompanied by a new De Molen beer, of course…
Enter ‘Sinaasappel & Limoen’ - Orange & Lime, a 7.5% Gose which will definitely help your head feel a little better. I’m comparing it to a very sparkly mimosa with a twist of freshness from the lime, and without all the pulp which inevitably makes washing up a freaking nightmare and which- I’m just hypothesising here- probably makes your hungover stomach turn. Plus, it is choc-a-block with vitamin C, so you’ll get some good nutrition too. It’s basically a health drink* to help with your resolutions.
Although it smells very tart, this is less sour than you may imagine. There’s a bright pop of freshly squeezed orange juiciness which carries through the entire experience, and a bright twist of lime to wake you up at the beginning- a little like adding lime to tacos. The initial fizz gives way to a fuller beer, though the bubbles remain- the best comparison I can make is to a new pétillante natural wine.
It’s obvious that the sea salt and coriander are doing their bit to curb what could be an overwhelming sweetness and ground the beer with a slight umami complexity in the mid-taste, especially when the kaffir lime moves beyond the citrus twist in the beginning and imparts some musky, floral notes. The coriander and sea salt become more prominent the more you let it sit and warm up. Did I expect such complexity from what looked like a straightforward beer?
Absolutely not, but I’m very happily surprised. It far surpasses even the best mimosas I’ve ever drunk, so it’s a good start to a sparkling 2025! It makes me look forward to summer (and all the brunches between now and then), and if you let it warm up a bit it also provides a small memory of my beloved Orange Cream Quality Streets for the the rest of ever chilly winter. So for now, I just need to decide if I want some eggs or a stack of pancakes…
