Beer review (EN):
Passie & Cacao
I should warn you: do not be put off by the smell of this year. Cacao and passion fruit is the combination I’ve been yearning for for years, since I set foot on my first ever chocolate tour of Brussels as a guide and stepped into a very particular shop.
My blast from the past aside, I urge you to try this beer if you are a lover of velvety textures and tropical tastes. It’s definitely more normal (at least as far as I can see) to pair chocolate with things like strawberries, raspberries, or oranges, but step a bit outside the box and wonders await. That being said, the initial smell is of deep, dry cacao but also some astringency of passion fruit- real passion fruit and not of the sugary sweet variety, so I understand why some may think it smells a bit odd.
I hope you’ll agree, though, once you taste it, any doubt is gone. The initial hit I get is pure dry cacao, like when you accidentally inhale strong hot chocolate powder, but there is a small sour hit which then bursts into a fizz not unlike the creme you get when pouring champagne. So far, so lightly complex. Then: it all changes. The beer practically melts into dark chocolate while retaining a very light, fluid texture and unleashing the passionfruit juiciness.
If you let it warm a little, a lot of the initial sourness from the passionfruit vanishes from the first sip and you get a lovely more-ish juicy flavour which melds with the rich chocolate beautifully. If I were asked (and well, I suppose I have been), I’d love to have just a small slice of very young, textured goat’s cheese with this to compliment it. The body is a little thinner than I’d expected from De Molen, but I definitely think that was the right choice for such bold and unexpected flavours. The aftertaste leaves you with some fizziness from the passionfruit- a mild petillant edge- and a really earthy and rich backing of the cacao. I do not exaggerate when I say I could happily drink this forever or have it in my back pocket as a surprising dessert at a dinner party, accompanied by the appropriate chocolate and cheese of course.
Now BRB as I head to Brussels (via Bodegraven) to pick up the appropriate supplies.
